Scientists have made a disturbing discovery after reaching the deepest point on planet Earth…
When you think about all the stuff we don’t know about the planet we live on, it can be pretty frightening!
From underneath the ocean to down in the earth’s deepest points, there are strange discoveries to be made that sound like something from science fiction.
And now, scientists have made a terrifying discovery at the bottom of the Mariana Trench…
The discovery was made at the deepest point on earth, Challenger Deep, which is 35,000ft below sea level.
It’s located in the Mariana Trench and is the furthest distance under the ocean on planet Earth.
It’s a mile deeper than the height of Mount Everest, which is pretty scary to think about.
But what scientists discovered down there has a profound implication for how humanity is treating the planet.
People have taken to social media to share their disgust about the news.
One person writes: “Yes, the extent of human impacts on the environment is… everywhere.”
Another adds: “Interesting that we as humans are able to pollute even the most desolate places on earth. We need to do better.”
Meanwhile, a third pens: “The total amount of trash we have thrown on the oceans must be an astronomical number.”
Oceanographer Dr Dawn Wright shared the news of the finding on social media.
She writes: “What did we see upon 1st touching bottom, at 10,900+m depth w/in #ChallengerDeep? A BEER BOTTLE!
“Further evidence that we MUST as humanity do BETTER by the ocean and for the health of habitats that we ourselves share and ultimately depend on!!! #ThereIsNoPlanetB #DeeperSeaDawn.”

She also tells the Los Angeles Times: “It had travelled more than 6.7 miles to the darkest depths of the Pacific, label still intact.
Although the discovery is highly concerning, others had a rather more positive spin on the situation.
One writes: “I mean – I’m bad ‘cause I just think it’s kinda dope that a beer bottle made it down that far.”
Another laughs: “Pros and cons about this… The positive is that we now know that a beer bottle can descend to the bottom while staying intact. The negative is obvious… there are human tracks where human tracks should never be.”
While a third points out: “Good advert for the beer company, ‘we will reach the deepest depths to deliver.’”
And a fourth jokes: “The depths men will go to, to have a beer in peace!”
