PROVO, Utah — Hundreds of family members, friends, firefighters, neighbors, and community supporters gathered to pay their final respects to Provo Fire Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina Long, and their three sons, Reid Vernon, Thayne Long, and Gage Long, following the devastating flash flood that claimed their lives during a family hiking trip in Wayne County, Utah.
The emotional farewell included a memorial service and a firefighter procession, with first responders from departments across northern Utah lining overpasses and streets to salute one of their own.

Authorities said Captain Spencer Long, Katrina Long, Reid Vernon, Thayne Long, and Gage Long were overtaken by rapidly rising floodwaters near Sunglow Campground outside Bicknell after heavy rainfall triggered a sudden flash flood.
Search-and-rescue teams recovered the family members during an extensive operation. Officials confirmed that the couple’s daughter, Lydia Vernon, was not on the trip and is the family’s sole surviving child.
During the memorial, friends and colleagues described Captain Spencer Long as a respected firefighter, devoted husband, and caring father who dedicated his career to protecting others.
