A social media post from the actress’s father offered a heartbreaking look at his family’s grief before authorities disclosed how the young actress lost her life.
Kaylee Hottle, the deaf actress who won audiences’ hearts as Jia in the “Godzilla” franchise, has died, leaving behind a grieving family and an outpouring of tributes from friends and colleagues.

Hours after her death, Kaylee’s father, Joshua Hottle, went live on Facebook from an airport as he prepared for a journey he said he never wanted to make.
The caption on the video read, “I am taking a flight that I never would like to take.” Using American Sign Language (ASL), Joshua spoke about the overwhelming grief his family was experiencing.

As interpreted by the Associated Press (AP), he said, “Kaylee’s mom and four siblings are crushed. They are together at home, grieving. I am on my way to Maryland to bring Kaylee’s body back home.”
What Authorities Said About the Crash That Killed Kaylee
As AP reported, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) later confirmed that Kaylee died following a single-vehicle crash early Tuesday morning, July 21, 2026, in the 11400 block of Windsor Road in Ijamsville, Maryland. She was 19.
Deputies and personnel from the Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services responded to the scene at approximately 2:52 a.m.
According to the preliminary investigation by FCSO, a 1995 Honda Accord driven by a 19-year-old Frederick man traveled off the right side of the two-lane roadway before striking a culvert. Authorities believe excessive speed was a contributing factor in the collision.
The driver and two passengers were inside the vehicle. Kaylee was transported from the scene to an area trauma center, where she was later pronounced dead. The driver was hospitalized with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, while the other passenger declined medical treatment at the scene.
The sheriff’s office said the crash remains under investigation and asked anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about the incident to contact its Traffic Unit.

Joshua Hottle Shared His Daughter’s Final Moments
While traveling to Maryland to bring his daughter’s body home, Joshua offered one of the family’s first public accounts of what happened after the crash.
He said emergency responders fought to save Kaylee following the collision, but her heart stopped before she reached the trauma center.
Joshua also spoke about the profound grief his family now faces. Despite the heartbreak, he reflected with gratitude on the time they shared together. “Very grateful for the 18 years we had together — and wish we had more,” he said on Facebook.
Dispatch Audio Revealed the Race to Save Kaylee
Additional details about the emergency response later emerged through dispatch audio obtained by TMZ.
According to the outlet, dispatchers were told Kaylee was unconscious after the collision. Emergency personnel also requested an ASL interpreter after learning the people involved in the crash were deaf.
The media outlet reported that a medical helicopter landed at a nearby baseball field before Kaylee was airlifted to the trauma center. Dispatchers also initially struggled to contact her parents because she had been visiting a friend in Maryland for the weekend.

Kaylee’s Father Had an Unexpected Message for the Driver
Even as he mourned the loss of his daughter, Joshua said he wanted the young man driving the vehicle to know he did not hold bitterness toward him. “I have forgiven you,” he said. “Don’t let this incident ruin the rest of your life.”
His remarks came as investigators continue working to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
How Kaylee Became the Heart of the “Godzilla” Films
Born on May 1, 2007, in Atlanta, Georgia, Kaylee came from an all-deaf family spanning four generations on her father’s side. Fluent in ASL from childhood, she appeared in commercials and advocacy campaigns before making her feature film debut.
She rose to international recognition in 2021 when she portrayed Jia in “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
As the orphaned deaf girl who shares a unique bond with Kong, Kaylee became one of the emotional anchors of the Monsterverse and introduced millions of viewers to a deaf character whose use of ASL became central to the story.
She reprised the role in “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” in 2024.

Outside the franchise, Kaylee appeared in an episode of “Magnum P.I.” and had also been cast in the upcoming film “What Doesn’t Kill Us,” reflecting a promising career that continued to grow.
Why Representation Meant So Much to Kaylee
Although she was still early in her career, Kaylee often said she hoped her work would help create more opportunities for deaf performers.
During a March 2024 interview with NDTV while promoting “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” she said she was initially nervous about returning for the sequel. However, she became more confident after learning director Adam Wingard would also return.
“When I found out I was going to be back in the second movie, I was a little bit nervous. But when I knew Adam was going to be there for the second movie, I knew he and I worked well together, so I became more confident.”
She also said returning to the franchise was easier because she already understood the pace of a major production, from working with green screens to waiting between scenes.
More importantly, Kaylee hoped seeing ASL on screen would encourage studios to cast more deaf actors and help deaf audiences see themselves represented.
“So when they see themselves portrayed using sign language on the screen, even though it’s short, they’re still using sign language,” she said. “You know, most of the times, their lines are a little bit shorter, but this hopefully will give more deaf people more opportunities to have roles like this, and they can enjoy movies more because they can see themselves portrayed in the movie.”

She added that meeting people who told her that her performances made them feel seen became one of the most rewarding parts of her career. She said:
“Yeah, when I would go out, you know, I had a lot of people, they would say such nice things about me. So it’s very nice.”

In another interview in 2024, Kaylee told the AP she had never imagined starring in a monster movie before landing the role of Jia in “Godzilla vs. Kong.” She credited her father with introducing her to the genre and said the people she admired most were “my parents and my sisters.”
How Hollywood and the Deaf Community Remembered Kaylee
Millie Bobby Brown shared a black-and-white still of Kaylee as Jia on her Instagram Story. The image showed the young actress looking upward while holding vegetation during a scene from “Godzilla vs. Kong.”
She said she was devastated by the news and remembered Kaylee as someone who would be deeply missed.

Alaqua Cox also honored Kaylee on her IG Story by reposting a memorial image originally shared by Complex. The black-and-white tribute showed Kaylee’s character from the “Godzilla” franchise beneath the words “Kaylee Hottle 2007–2026.”
Alongside the image, Alaqua said she was heartbroken over Kaylee’s death and expressed her sympathy for the actress’s family, ending the tribute with a broken-heart emoji.

Rebecca Hall, who portrayed Dr. Ilene Andrews in both “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” shared several behind-the-scenes photos from their years working together.

Alongside the photos, Rebecca wrote, “Devastated to hear this news. My heart goes out to your family. You will be missed Kaylee.”
Legendary Pictures also honored Kaylee on X, saying she brought “extraordinary heart, humanity, and light” to her portrayal of Jia in the “Godzilla” franchise.
The studio described her as a cherished member of its film family, said her kindness, warmth, and remarkable talent touched everyone who worked alongside her, and extended its condolences to her family and loved ones.
Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin also remembered Kaylee in a Facebook tribute, saying she was “absolutely gutted” by the news and expressing hope that Kaylee’s beauty and talent would continue inspiring others.
Fellow Oscar winner Troy Kotsur reflected on the tragedy by saying it made him think of his own daughter. He wrote that the loss was a reminder “not to take time for granted” as he extended his deepest condolences to Kaylee’s family.
The Texas School for the Deaf, where Kaylee was a senior, also honored her memory on Instagram. “Our hearts are with Kaylee’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her during this incredibly difficult time,” the school said.
The school said counseling services would be available for students and staff while urging the public to “refrain from sharing or speculating about the circumstances surrounding the accident” as authorities continue investigating the crash.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by Rochella Jones has been launched to support Kaylee’s family following her death. The fundraiser describes the actress as a beloved daughter and member of her community whose “kindness, laughter, and generous spirit” touched many lives.
According to the fundraiser, donations will help cover funeral expenses, provide meals for the family, and pay for other unexpected costs as they navigate the weeks ahead.
As of publication, the campaign had raised more than $16,100 toward its $20,000 goal through more than 270 donations.
“Any support you can give will mean so much to Kaylee’s family as they try to heal and move forward. Thank you for your generosity, compassion, and for keeping Kaylee’s loved ones in your thoughts during this heartbreaking time,” the fundraiser stated.
