The 48-year-old, best known for her roles in Legally Blonde, Walk the Line, and Big Little Lies, has spent decades charming audiences with her on-screen work.
But even an Academy-award-winning actress isn’t immune to an awkward award show blunder – especially one that cost her a friendship for good.
Witherspoon admitted to co-star Will Ferrell in an interview with PEOPLE that she “embarrassed” a well-known “proper actress” while giving a speech.
“It literally haunts me,” she confessed to Ferrell, explaining that instead of presenting her former friend with a heartfelt message, she decided to roast her.
Witherspoon didn’t name the actress in question but offered some clues. She described the event as “British,” “elegant,” and “classy” – a setting that, in hindsight, wasn’t the right place for her humor.
“This friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well but she was a very serious, proper actress, she asked me to give her an award,” she explained. “But I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up and I roasted her.”

One joke, in particular, stood out – and not in a good way. “‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?’” she recalled saying in front of the audience.
While the actress thought it was hilarious, her famous friend didn’t. “I thought it was so funny and it was just, I had the wrong audience,” she admitted. “It was pretty bad.”
Witherspoon revealed that the sour joke led to the end of a friendship. “Not even kidding, she doesn’t talk to me anymore. Oh well,” she added.
The identity of the offended actress remains a mystery, but fans are piecing together clues based on Witherspoon’s past award show appearances.
Last year, the Cruel Intentions star honored her Big Little Lies co-star Nicole Kidman with the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024. However, during that event, Kidman was seen laughing as Witherspoon playfully imitated her Australian accent.
The Legally Blonde star has also attended the BAFTAs in 2015 and 2023, hanging out with British actresses like Keira Knightley, Rosamund Pike, and Felicity Jones – but she was not listed as a presenter at either ceremony.
