Donald Trump’s deep roots in Palm Beach could become more evident throughout his presidency.

Through a series of exclusive interviews with sources close to Trump and his family, PEOPLE learned that the incoming president may desire to conduct his upcoming official duties from his Palm Beach home, Mar-a-Lago, and spend less time in Washington, D.C.

“I think Trump will try to run the nation from Mar-a-Lago. He has always wanted to do that,” a political source tells PEOPLE, adding, “He is blissfully happy in Palm Beach.”

Long before Trump purchased the 1920s-era Mar-a-Lago estate, it was envisioned as a space that could become a “Winter White House” for a future president.

Its original owner, cereal company heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, left the property to the National Park Service when she died so that it could become a place for government business, though it was returned to private ownership due to the costs of upkeep.

Trump acquired Mar-a-Lago in 1985 and, decades later, fulfilled Post’s vision to treat it as his own presidential hub.

In the final weeks before Trump’s inauguration, the president-elect has been preparing for the role from Mar-a-Lago — with the assistance of Elon Musk, whom Trump named co-leader of his proposed Department of Government Efficiency.

Musk — the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, and the richest person in the world — has been serving as an adviser to Trump, several sources confirm. He’s even living nearby, at least part-time, a Palm Beach source says, making his working relationship with Trump easier.

“Musk is staying in a cottage very close to Mar-a-Lago, but he wouldn’t be coming and going so freely if he didn’t have Donald’s blessing,” the Palm Beach source tells PEOPLE.

A political source speculates that Musk’s closeness to Trump’s political decisions could certainly change after Trump’s inauguration. The logistics and formality of the White House could become a barrier to Musk’s access, the source says, as could his responsibilities to his businesses.

When asked if Musk could have an office in the White House, the political source responds that it “certainly is possible.”

Trump and Musk’s partnership is smooth for the time being, many sources confirm, though any policy disagreements or altered power dynamics could upset their “bestie” relationship, the political source says.

“As long as Elon is functioning as an adviser and helping Donald with what he wants him to help him with, he will be welcome,” the political source tells PEOPLE. “But if it should become a shadow presidency, it will end. Donald asks questions and listens to all, but makes his own decisions for the most part.”

They add, “Trump advisers, Musk included, are there to serve a function.”
