In the United States, tipping is really different from how it works in other countries. Recently, a video made by a server about leaving a tip went viral on social media and got a lot of people talking.
Taking to TikTok, user @mylasoasis_ spoke of the tipping practice and suggested that if you don’t leave a tip of 20% of the bill, you don’t deserve to dine at a restaurant.
Lately, tipping has become a hot topic online, with lots of people expressing their annoyance about how leaving less than 15-20% is seen as disrespectful and not enough.
In her video, Lillie mentions, “Going out to eat is a luxury, not something you’re entitled to. If you can’t tip 20%, then maybe you shouldn’t be dining out.”
She talked about how much servers get paid in the U.S. and mentioned that even though people think restaurant owners should pay servers more, that’s just not how it works here. Because of this, servers have to depend on tips to make a living.
“You can say all you want that my boss should give me a better paycheck, but this is America, and that’s just not how it is,” she said. “I only make $3.63 an hour from the restaurant I work at. My real income comes from the tips I get.”
She added that restaurant menu prices are intentionally kept lower, so that customers leave a tip.
“The food is priced lower because you are expected to leave a tip on it,” she explained. “If you cannot afford to tip, then you don’t deserve to dine out.”
Lillie talked about how being a server is a lot like being a nanny. She said, “If you can’t pay someone a full salary, then you shouldn’t have a nanny.”
At the end of her video, she mentioned that if you can’t leave a tip, then “you really shouldn’t be eating out.” The TikToker recommended that people who don’t tip should just go to fast-food places instead of nice restaurants.
“And for anyone who thinks we should get paid more per hour… Sure, but that’s not happening! Not tipping will just make your time at the restaurant worse!”
Needless to say, the video attracted the attention of many who shared their opinion.
“I always tip, but the entitlement is just wild, like, find a different job that doesn’t require you to run around and pays you well hourly,” one person commented.
One person mentioned that if someone is unhappy with their job, they should look for other opportunities. They said, “If your job doesn’t pay enough to live on, you need to find a different one. This is just crazy.”
As expected, some people online agreed with Lillie about tipping. One person shared, “I only make $2.13 an hour, and we don’t even get real paychecks.” Another chimed in, “SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK!”
Someone else suggested, “You go, girl! If someone doesn’t tip because they think employers should pay better, they should only support businesses that actually do that.”
Others mentioned that they tip based on how good the service is, saying that 20% is way too much if the service isn’t good.
